BART to SFO / Flying back to Los Angeles

Dan Bay Area

Taking the BART to the airport was a leisurely commute, and took about 35 minutes or so.  Once there, it was just a matter of taking another shuttle to the terminal, where I got into the stupidly long security line. No issues this time (unlike in Nashville), and then I was at the gate. The flight was pretty packed, but fortunately I had a window seat.  It was a short flight back to Los Angeles, and I made it back …

House of Nanking / The Embarcadero

Dan Bay Area

The walk into Chinatown wasn’t very far – and it was mostly downhill. We passed a park, where a bunch of elderly Chinese men were gathered in groups, huddled around watching something.  Turns out it was Chinese Checkers. Our destination was House of Nanking, a restaurant that had been strongly recommended by a friend of mine – and corroborated with my research as one of the best eateries in Chinatown.  We started with the fried onion cakes served with the …

Nob Hill / Drinks at The Fairmont and Top of the Mark

Dan Bay Area

After wandering around the Fisherman’s Wharf area, we drove back to the hotel, and then decided to walk the short distance to Nob Hill.  It was only a few blocks, but it sure was steep, so it took a little time. But you could get neat pix like this: By the time we got to the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel, we were definitely in need of a drink. Unfortunately, The Top of the Mark wasn’t opening until 5pm! Argh! So …

Leaving the Ranch / Boudin’s Bistro / Pier 39

Dan Bay Area

Woke up again pretty early, since I had to pack and we had to leave the Ranch to get Paul to the airport in time for his noon flight. We had a 9am tour scheduled as well, so I made sure to get a few snaps before leaving.  Once more, here’s the Norman Rockwell room that I stayed in. Probably the most surprising thing was what I discovered in the downstairs bathroom in the Inn.  On the wall are two …

Skywalker Session / Frontoio / More Night Photos

Dan Bay Area

Woke up at 7:20am, and after getting some stuff done, headed downstairs for breakfast.  The coffee machine was enticing me with its brew, and the photo speaks for itself. The weather outside was absolutely amazing – not a cloud in the sky, beautifully clear and crisp – it was in the high 60s. The scoring session went pretty well – three hours of strings, and then three hours of brass after lunch.  More on that in a year or so …

Sol Food / Stars at Night

Dan Bay Area

For dinner, Dan, Paul and I drove back towards the freeway, to check out a pizza place that had been highly rated on Yelp.com.  Unfortunately, we got there to discover that the place was closed on Mondays!  Argh.  Now super-hungry, we continued further south into San Rafael, and went to another spot that was on my “must try” list – Sol Food. This Puerto Rican restaurant was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives“, and had looked really good. This tiny …

Bluebottle Coffee Co. / Arriving at the Skywalker Ranch

Dan Bay Area

We headed into San Francisco, with a mission for some coffee before continuing on to the Skywalker Ranch.  A quick Google search resulted in the “best coffee in San Francisco” being the Bluebottle Coffee Co., so I found a convenient location, and we went there. It was a small little kiosk hidden down a side street, but it reeked of “San Francisco” charm. I got the New Orleans-styled Iced Coffee, which was absolutely delicious. I can’t remember what was in …

Off to the Bay Area

Dan Bay Area

I woke up early today to finish packing and get some stuff done – I’m heading up to the Skywalker Scoring Stage to attend the recording of a score for Jason Graves, and it should be a pretty fun trip! I’ve never stayed at the Ranch before (only had my brief day trip visit in April), so this should be quite the experience. I hear that it’s like a vacation….. Waiting for the shuttle from Lot C turned out to …
