Leaving the Ranch / Boudin’s Bistro / Pier 39

Dan Bay Area

Woke up again pretty early, since I had to pack and we had to leave the Ranch to get Paul to the airport in time for his noon flight. We had a 9am tour scheduled as well, so I made sure to get a few snaps before leaving.  Once more, here’s the Norman Rockwell room that I stayed in. Probably the most surprising thing was what I discovered in the downstairs bathroom in the Inn.  On the wall are two …

Skywalker Session / Frontoio / More Night Photos

Dan Bay Area

Woke up at 7:20am, and after getting some stuff done, headed downstairs for breakfast.  The coffee machine was enticing me with its brew, and the photo speaks for itself. The weather outside was absolutely amazing – not a cloud in the sky, beautifully clear and crisp – it was in the high 60s. The scoring session went pretty well – three hours of strings, and then three hours of brass after lunch.  More on that in a year or so …

Sol Food / Stars at Night

Dan Bay Area

For dinner, Dan, Paul and I drove back towards the freeway, to check out a pizza place that had been highly rated on Yelp.com.  Unfortunately, we got there to discover that the place was closed on Mondays!  Argh.  Now super-hungry, we continued further south into San Rafael, and went to another spot that was on my “must try” list – Sol Food. This Puerto Rican restaurant was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives“, and had looked really good. This tiny …

Loveless Cafe

Dan Nashville (2009)

After moseying for a while, we arrived at our destination: The Loveless Cafe There was a sizable crowd there, and we were told that our wait would be about 80-90 minutes. Apparently that’s pretty typical for a weekend, so while Justin and Phil explored the shops, Penka and I decided to go for a drive further south.  We went only about 12 miles or so down the road, through Fairview, TN.  Along the way, we passed through a few rain …

Cocktails / F. Scott's

Dan Nashville (2009)

The choir session went splendidly, and we did indeed use the fourth hour.  After everyone packed up their stuff, we headed back to the hotel.  Justin and I decided to partake once more of the complimentary cocktails, and after and hour of chilling and chatting, Phil and Penka joined us, as well as Greg (the mixer) and his girlfriend.  We went off to F. Scott’s Restaurant and Jazz Bar, an upscale place about 4 miles from the hotel.  It was …

Three Down, One to Go

Dan Nashville (2009)

Before bed last night, I hit the elliptical machine in the fitness room for a little over half-an-hour; it certainly helped not only make me tired enough to go to bed, but also made me feel not as guilty about the meal! Woke up again at 6:30am; way too early for me on a Saturday, but I’ll manage. At breakfast today, they happened to have the next item on my checklist: biscuits and gravy. (When I found out I was …

Cocktail Hour / Lower Broadway / Jack's Bar-B-Que

Dan Nashville (2009)

After relaxing at the hotel for a bit, Phil and Justin and I met up downstairs to see what this cocktail reception thing was all about. Apparently, you show your room key and photo ID (yes, I got carded!) and you get a free drink.  No stated limit either, just one at a time. So we all relaxed and drank, and then when everyone came down, we hopped in the car and drove down to Lower Broadway. We found some …

Late Night Dinner / Rooftop

Dan Spain (2009)

After the concert, a private dinner reception was held on the terrace of the music hall. It was a nice function, with wine and three large tables where we all sat and enjoyed a good multi-course meal.  By the time it was over, it was about 2:45am – but the night was just beginning! We got back to the hotel around 3:15am or so, and then it was just a matter of cleaning up, packing, and getting ready for the …

Concert After-Party

Dan Spain (2009)

Just a short distance away from the Auditorio was a restaurant, where the patio had been reserved for us to enjoy a cocktail party.  Tapas were served, and quite tasty, but the big hit was the Cuban rum (something you can’t readily get in the States), especially with Coke Zero! After a few hours, it was definitely time to get to bed, and a few of us were driven back to the hotel.  In the morning, Ana, Melinda and I …

Concert Rehearsal / La Laguna

Dan Spain (2009)

After breakfast this morning, I met up with Carly and Melinda, and we took a taxi to the Music Auditorium, where the rehearsal was ongoing for tonight’s big concert. After hanging and watching for a bit, Melinda and I walked over to the tram station, where we got tickets to go to the other end of the line, in La Laguna. Since we had missed the walking tour on Wednesday, we wanted to go check it out and take pictures. …
