Signs

Dan Goldwasser Movie Reviews

Went to go see Signs tonight. The film itself isn’t bad – it takes its time to set up the story, and if anything, director M. Night Shyamalan does a rather effective job setting the mood. Ultimately it’s a film about faith, and a man who has lost his faith and how he regains it. Crop circles? An alien invasion of earth? Well, that’s really all just window dressing. Which makes the last 20 minutes of the film a real disappointment. I mean, it’s one thing to change the focus of your film to get a “climax” out of it, but it’s another thing entirely to show us the aliens. I thought it was rather effective when we didn’t see them. But still, I enjoyed myself at the movie, and James Newton Howard’s creepy score is one I really dug – especially cause it worked so well in the trailers.
