Back in May, I talked about the Joss Whedon television show “Firefly”. Then I finally got my own copies of the DVD a few weeks ago when I was at Fox. And tonight, I saw Serenity, the feature film that takes place after the show.
Holy crap. It was awesome.
Now I’m not going to get into the details, but this film works for both fans and newbies alike. Sure you’ll get more out of it if you’ve seen the show, but you can still figure out quite quickly what is going on, and who these people are. There is really very little I can write. I’m still mulling it over in my head, and trying to soak it all in.
But for the sake of a “review”, the dialogue is good, the actors very comfortable with their characters (duh), the visual effects well done, the music just right, and the pacing perfect.
One thing I will say: during the show, we never got to see the “Reavers”, men who went insane at the edge of space and are ruthless killers who eat people alive. Better to be killed than captured by a Reaver, they always said. Anyways, in the movie, we finally get to see them, and learn a bit more about them. Yikes!
Oh – and the movie – which is about 2 hours long – is at the “high end” of PG-13, just scraping the edge of R-rated material. It was so cool though, and I can’t wait to see it again!
