Tonight I saw the latest comedy from Christopher Guest, For Your Consideration. This mild-mannered movie is about a small group of actors making an overly dramatic film, Home for Purim. When word starts to go around that one or more of the actors might be up for an Oscar for the role, how the cast and crew react to this possible news is what the real film (For Your Consideration) is about. There are plenty of movie-within-a-movie jokes, and there’s lots of Jewish humor. I laughed quite a bit, but when all was said and done, this film wasn’t as good as Guest’s previous films. I don’t know if it’s because he eschewed the “mockumentary” formula for a more traditional narrative, but it just felt like half a film at times. Catherine O’Hara is great as Marilyn Hack, the faded actress whose dreams of awards and success seem to be on the verge of happening. In fact, she even won the National Board of Review award for Best Supporting Actress for this performance, and she’s worth seeing. But I’d say, rent it.
