Woke up at 7:20am, and after getting some stuff done, headed downstairs for breakfast. The coffee machine was enticing me with its brew, and the photo speaks for itself. The weather outside was absolutely amazing – not a cloud in the sky, beautifully clear and crisp – it was in the high 60s. The scoring session went pretty well – three hours of strings, and then three hours of brass after lunch. More on that in a year or so …
Sol Food / Stars at Night
For dinner, Dan, Paul and I drove back towards the freeway, to check out a pizza place that had been highly rated on Yelp.com. Unfortunately, we got there to discover that the place was closed on Mondays! Argh. Now super-hungry, we continued further south into San Rafael, and went to another spot that was on my “must try” list – Sol Food. This Puerto Rican restaurant was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives“, and had looked really good. This tiny …
More Color to B&W Photo Adjustments
Another test, showing a little before-and-after for a photo that wasn’t shot in RAW. Before: After:
Boston from the Air
When flying into Boston the other day, the weather was really great. I took a few shots from the plane as we went flying over Massachusetts. While I could see all the way down to Rhode Island and Connecticut, my point-and-shoot didn’t get a good shot of the visibility. (But it was quite a nice view!) I did, however, get a few shots as we were going over Boston to line up for our approach to the airport. (Click for …
The Cover of Daily Variety *UPDATED*
Two photos that I took at the scoring session for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were licensed by Daily Variety for their Film and TV Music issue. Yes, I got credit (and a link to the website) – but what I didn’t realize was that not only did they use the two photographs in the article about the film, but they also used on of them – very largely – on the front cover of the magazine! I’ll get …
Photo Book Vol. 2
I need to start putting together the second volume of my “Scoring in Los Angeles” photo book, for the RMA. The tricky part will be, as before, to figure out which photos to use. I just have waaay too many of them. But I want to use as many candids of the musicians as possible. Something to show their personalities and/or situations that they deal with. Here’s a photo I took at a recent session that I really like – …
Morning at Bastyr
After waking up at 7am, we snagged breakfast at the hotel and then drove over to Bastyr University. The orchestral portion of the score (for the game “Alpha Protocol”) is to be recorded at the chapel at the university. There are a few hours for them to prep and set up and stuff, so I’m off on my own and decided to wander down one of the paths into the woods to see about snagging some pix. It was very …
Influence at Charlie O's
Composer Ron Jones hired me to take photos of his new Jazz Orchestra, “Influence”, at their performance at Charlie O’s Jazz Club tonight. The venue was really small, and I wish I had brought earplugs – it was lound! But the music was boistrous and fun. Lots of great big-band standards, as well as a few new pieces. There were a few Frank Sinatra tunes played, sung by “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, who definitely has the voice for it. …
Scoring Session Photo Book on Location
Here’s percussionist Wade Culbreathe with my scoring sessions photo book that he bought:
Photobook
That photobookof various scoring session pictures I mentioned last week went on auction tonight at the annual RMA celebration. I wasn’t getting any of the money (it was a donation to the RMA), and it ended up going for over $200! There is a lot of interest in the book, so I might do a limited private run for a bunch of people…. I’ll be sure to let you blog-readers know if and when that happens, if you want to …
